98-26 (and a lot of family health talk)

98 days left in this pregnancy, give or take a few.
26 weeks along.
Wow.

Yesterday, my sister emailed me at work and asked what I was doing after school. Apparently, with the snow, my parents couldn't get out of the house for their podiatrist appointments. Mom was having a skin graft done (has to be done the day the graft is flown in) and Dad was having a re-check from his appointment on Monday.

I rushed there after school, shoveled a bit so mom could ride the scooter down the ramp and over to the car. Played the car shuffle. (They can't get into my van and the city had declared a snow emergency, so I could not park on the street.)

We finally got to the doctor at 5. I got the walker out of the trunk for my dad and sent him on his way inside. I went inside got the office's wheelchair and then brought mom in. We proceeded to wait in the waiting room for over an hour. All the while with my parents bickering like 5 year olds with each other.

After 6 I wheeled mom back and got her in the exam chair. Then I sat in the lobby with dad. Finally they called him back and then it was just me. I was getting hungry, but eh. I couldn't really leave.

After all was said and done, my mom received some good news. Her wound is healing nicely and she is off the wound vac until her next appointment at least.

Dad, however, has to get to the hospital. They didn't know if I was going to have to take him last night or if he could go in the morning. After I finally got them home, around 7:45ish, I did the car and parent shuffle, dad called the on-call cardiologist (who will have to admit him) and I made my mom some dinner.

I got them all settled and then headed home. Thank G for B, who had dinner waiting for me, which I finally was able to eat at 8:45. What a long day.

I have no idea how long my dad will be in the hospital and he has been the caretaker for my mom since she returned from the hospital. He has gangrene in his toe and it may need to be amputated if the cardio-vascular doc cannot get circulation to the infection. He had a PAD procedure done a week or two ago which was supposed to get rid of the 80% blockage in that leg...but I'm guessing it did not work. My guess is they will try some high dose antibiotic therapy and do something to help the blockage. (For a day or two). If that doesn't work, they will take the toe off. In the meantime, we have to figure out what to do with mom. She only has a nurse come to the house on MWF and he is only there for an hour or so.

She can't walk, but she can get around fairly well in the wheel chair. She can't get into the bathroom though, so she uses a commode in her bedroom. This may be a lonnnnnnnnng few weeks.

...and this is why they call us "the sandwich generation"... We juggle taking care of our parents and our kids. I hope your dad won't have to have the toe amputated, and I hope that your mom will have the help she needs without it all being put into your lap... Mucho prayers coming from your south.
