Confession

I've had 3 days worth of positive HPTs. (including two at the doctor's office)
However, when they drew blood yesterday (10DPO), my qualitative pregancy test came back negative.
So...I'm not pregnant?
I just took another test when I got home and the second line came up clear as day.
I'm confused.

This is what the nurse just emailed me after I asked her why I would have two separate answers:

I asked Dr. C and he indicated that if your urine is concentrated or if you
take a pregnancy test in the mornings, it will give a false reading. He said it
usually is not positive until you have two bright lines.

This was my response to the nurse:

I am very happy to be reacting to the medicine. However, I find it very odd that I would get so many false positives, both at your office and my home (at different points of the day and different levels of concentration of urine). What is the labs cut-off for the qualitative HCG? I know that labs vary and some are low (like 5 and others are as high as 50). Also, I have seen many pregnancy tests (both positive and negative) and dealt with many doctors . Although I respect Dr. C, I do disagree with his opinion that it is not positive until you have two bright lines. A line is a line is a line on a pregnancy test (unless of course it is an evap line....but I know all about those as well).I'm hoping I can prove him wrong, but I guess only time will tell. It's still so early in my cycle, I am willing to believe I could be pregnant.

Never ever have them do a qualitative test. They might have a cutoff of like 50... Always always make sure they do a quantitative so you know for sure what your numbers are. Sorry you're having such weirdness!

WTF?!? This maybe a stupid question but is their anyway they mixed up your sample with someone else? I don't understand how you could be getting BFPs but a negative beta :(

Hoping the pregnancy tests are right!!

That's very, very odd. So there was no beta at all?

thinking of you.

That's really bizarre. Could there have been a lab error on the blood draw?

Okay the nurse/doc response is just bizarre. If you are having positive home hpts and you didn't do a trigger shot, how in the world could that be a false positive? I think 10DPO is wicked early for a beta. Can you get it repeated in a few days? Either way...this is exciting!

I think 10 dpo is really early for a blood test... if it's not quantitative, then I wouldn't really be worried about the blood test.

As a biologist, I can tell you that there is NO REASON you would have HCG in your urine high enough to trigger a + pregnancy test, besides pregnancy, unless 1.) you injected HCG into your body for a trigger shot or 2.) you have a rare kind of HCG-producing tumor.

I remain very optimistic that you are in fact pregnant! Here's hoping for the best!!

I remain extremely optimistic about the fact that you are pregnant. Here's hoping the HCG levels continue to rise and that this pregnancy sticks!!!

What?! A line is a line.

I hope you get some clarity soon. Congrats!

I don't get the nurse's response at all. But I agree with you, a line is a line is a line on an HPT.

Can you have a repeat beta done? I can't see how several HPTs could all be positive but all be wrong... that just doesn't make sense. Good luck!

Yeah, that is a weird answer from the nurse... How could MULTIPLE tests give false positives? I thought it was much more likely to get a false negative... And don't the instructions say that concentrated urine is the best to use???

Hoping that the pee sticks are right! I think you should insist on another beta in a few days!

Since your test was at 10dpo it is highly likely that your level was under 25 at that point (which is most likely their qualitative cutoff). Remember, mine was 50 at 12 dpo so probably would've been around 25 or even lower at 10 dpo. But it's enough for some HPTs to be + in either case. I say go back in for another beta tomorrow and it for sure should be + in the blood.

Ok that is crazy! I agree with Elana, get a quant test! Hoping you do prove thath Dr wrong!!!

I would belived the hpt..same results at different times of days.. hang in there! fingers crossed!

I've been following along and I'm sorry we're both in such frustrating places. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and hoping answers are soon yours. Take care!

That makes ABSOLUTELY no sense whatsoever. But then, I've only had docs who do quantitative, not qualitative. Can your doc do a quantitative beta and give you numbers? 10 IS super early, so it's possible that, if they're looking for numbers around 14dpo, when it would be around 50, that may be their cut-off, so yeah, you'd be below that. Weeeeird.

(but man! eeeee! quietly. I promise.)

I didn't know they even still did qualitative hcgs anymore!

I can't say anything else, because I'm not sure what response you are looking for :) And I don't wanna be too positive for you.

HUGS!!!!!!

A line is a line is a line... I'm hoping the HPTs are correct.

oh I am so hoping with you!

Crossing fingers and holding on to hope that the Dr is wrong. I agree a line is a line is a line. All of those positive HPTs can't be wrong. The whole thing isnt adding up to a negative. I agree with everyone else. Go back and get another beta. Maybe it was too early.

WHOO HOO! Just had to get that out :) Now, I was under the impression that a line is a line... I am praying that this gets sorted out quickly for you guys because this limbo sucks.
