A Bulleted Post

  • Last night was the second night in a row that I dreamt that we had a baby and were trying for #2 (even though the babies in my dreams were not that old).
  • I woke up thinking I was 10DPO..nope. 9DPO.
  • My temps have remained high, so please keep those fingers crossed.
  • The Olympic closing ceremony is making me cry. Why? I have no idea. I can't even distinguish if they are tears of joy or tears of sadness.
  • I only wish NBC was airing the ceremony live, instead I have to watch it on CBC, which doesn't come in very clearly. Oh, the joy of no cable.
  • Yesterday I was a little obsessed with taking my resting pulse. Anyone have stories about this during early pregnancy?
  • For the past 4 days or so, I have been very clumsy. I don't know what my deal is, and I don't think I could blame that on hormones..lol. Today I almost fell down the stairs letting the dogs out. It is a good thing I thought to jump to the landing. Eek!

I have no idea how the pulse thing works but when I was pregnant - and didn't know it yet - my acupuncturist took my pulse and said, "You are pregnant." I could test for another 3-4 days. But he was right.

Okay, I stumbled on your blog and I feel creepy about it because this is really personal stuff and we are in the midst of it right now too (which is how I stumbled on the blog in the first place). We have tried 2 IUIs and I am now on clomid. I am 43, so my chances are slim. Hrmph. no problems with the accidental pregnancy when I was 25 (and still thought I was straight), but now? Right. We've been together for 8 years and met in grad school. It's good to see another pair of women out there trying; we feel a little isolated. Well, anyway--good luck. (I had a hot flash on the first night with clomid. Hooo boy! That was something else!)

Fingers crossed, so tight!!

And there was a cycle that I was obsessed with taking my pulse...what I learned? That my pulse is elevated even when I'm not pregnant.

Fingers crossed. FYI, my partner Kim fell down the stairs a couple of days after we found out she was pregnant. So, maybe hormones can cause clumsiness, hmmm... :)

Oooh, good luck!

The pulse thing is very interesting! It makes sense that your pulse would increase later on in pregnancy as your blood volume increases... but I can't really explain why it would be detectable so early.

My resting pulse rate has gone way down (to about 45 beats/minute) as a result of lots of cardiovascular-system strengthening exercise (just another perk of marathon training!). I think that 70-80 beats/minute is a lot more usual! So, because pulse rates are so different for different people and their fitness levels, I don't think that someone would be able to tell whether you are pregnant or not from looking at your pulse and comparing it to other peoples. I *do* think it might be possible to notice difference in your personal measurements comparing pre-pregnancy to pregnancy, assuming that all other factors (such as exercise) stay the same. Otherwise, if pregnancy coincides with getting less exercise, I could see how your pulse rate might go up as your heart becomes less efficient as you get out of shape!

I also have heard that a measure of persistent over-training in runners is if your resting heart rate goes *up* at any point. So, maybe the increased pulse rate during early pregnancy, is a product of the same exertion effect, where your body is stressed by the demands being made of it.
